The Sheffield Youth Orchestra was formed in 1964 with the aim
of providing young, local musicians the opportunity to gain valuable orchestral
experience.
Rehearsals are held at Croft House, Garden Street, S1 4BJ on
Saturdays from 10.00 am until 12.30 pm.
We meet during term time: SEPTEMBER - DECEMBER, JANUARY -
MARCH and APRIL - JUNE
We perform 4 to 5 concerts each year, usually at the
end of Term. Our repertoire has a great variety of challenging music, mostly
classical interspersed with Film Music, and all is performed to a high standard.
Players are encouraged to suggest new items for the repertoire.
Regular activities include an annual residential weekend at
Crich in early Spring. This is great fun and contributes much to the musical and
social development of the orchestra.
To hear us "live" visit YouTube for our Edinburgh
Fringe performance of "Peter and the Wolf".
At the end of each term there is usually a concert, during which a great variety of challenging music is performed to a high standard. Much of the repertoire is suggested by the players themselves.
Regular activities include an annual residential weekend which, as well as being great fun, contributes much to the musical and social development of the orchestra.
We are always interested to find new, enthusiastic young musicians to join us. In particular we would welcome more players in our brass and string sections: so get in touch soon if you can play the trumpet, french horn, viola, trombone, double bass or tuba. (We can provide loan instruments for double bass players.)
Membership is subject to audition and the standard required depends on the
instrument and the number of available places, but the following guide may prove
helpful: STRINGS, Grade 5 and above; WOODWIND, Grade 6 and above; BRASS,
Grade 5 and above. We have some instruments to loan to needful players
including Double Bass, Trombone, Viola, A Clarinet.
Our present subscription at £75 p.a. is one of the lowest in
the country.
